It's even more irritating that if you have to deal with a range of instruments, old and new, they probably all have their own connector formats too.
So how do you set up a way of connecting instruments to your computer system which is flexible enough not to restrict the instruments you can use? The answer is to use the 'classic' interface, the RS232 port, and software which can convert whatever format the instrument manufacturers choose to provide their data in, to whatever format is most desirable for your computer system.
