Nicola Tidow, scientific advisor at GeneSys Laboratory, explained: "We not only deliver raw data to our research customers, but also conduct analyses on it and offer them our expertise in tumour biology, especially breast cancer and prostate cancer.
"As a relatively new company, we had to equip an entire laboratory and I knew precisely what I was looking for.
"The 1700 chemiluminescent microarray analyser from Applied Biosystems has additional features I had not seen on competitors' systems and the preliminary data convinced us to buy it.
"Now we have performed many experiments, we know it is as good as we were told.
"We can screen the entire human genome of one individual, about 28,000 human genes, in one experiment including about 6000 genes that are not available in public databases.
"It takes three days to do 12 arrays and, although this seems like a long time, there are no other techniques that take less time to get that amount of information out of one sample - the instrument really is quite amazing.
"My previous experience of Applied Biosystems' equipment has been very good.
"Its instruments use very good chemistry and give highly reproducible results and the company has excellent expertise.
"We have a good co-operative relationship with its representatives and while they support us with information on running experiments, it is just as useful for them to get feedback from us on using the instrument.".
