Instrument is of a similar size and shape to a mobile telephone, and comes complete with a thermal imaging camera, a visible imaging camera, a laser locator and thermal- and visible-channel displays

In what it calls a radical move to open thermal imaging and radiometry to a much wider user base, Armstrong Optical has announced the immediate availability of a new, low cost addition to its range of thermal imaging and visible imaging camera systems The M4 camera is a hand-held instrument of a similar size and shape to a mobile telephone, weighing less than 300g

It comes complete with a thermal imaging camera, a visible imaging camera, a laser locator and thermal- and visible-channel displays, allowing easy identification of thermal properties.

On-board software functions - accessed via a set of thumb-operated keys - allow temperature measurements with sensitivity of about0.1C.

Object emissivity, single and multiple point temperatures, isotherms, max/min and electronic zoom are all standard functions ensuring comprehensive probing for, and pinpointing of, potential problems.

The M4 camera has 8Gb of on-board data storage for thermal and visible images plus up to 300 seconds of voice annotation per image pair, and for complete data security the stored data can be easily transferred to a PC system via a USB interface.

Bundled with the camera is a suite of Windows-based post-processing software offering an extensive range of temperature measurement, image processing and report generating functions.

The M4 has already shown itself to be ideal for applications such as energy management and thermal surveys, analysis of storage/reactor tank levels and insulation, pipe blockage, motor and pump bearings, overheating electrical switchgear, transformers, bus-bars and power lines plus many, many more, says the company.

As if that wasn't enough, the M4 is available in four colours.
