Cardiff pollution research group looks at genetic response of specific lung cells to diesel exhaust particles, using nylon macro arays

The lung and particles research group at Cardiff University is using nylon macro arrays from BD Biosciences to gain a greater insight into exactly how pollutant particles damage specific lung cells The group, led by Professor Roy Richards, has already successfully used similar arrays to look at the effects of diesel exhaust particles on the lung

Postgraduate student Helen Wise explained: "The earlier experiments used smaller arrays and served as a pilot study to complement existing research within the group.

My research is now extending this research to look at individual cell types and I am using the arrays to evaluate the genetic response of cell isolates exposed in vitro to particulate air pollution.

"The arrays are relatively quick and simple to perform and the user-friendly software makes analysis very easy.
