Power analysis software transforms a digital oscilloscope into a sophisticated power analysis tool, generating detailed test reports in customisable formats

The Tektronix TDSPWR2 power analysis software, now available from TTi (Thurlby Thandar Instruments), transforms a digital oscilloscope into a sophisticated power analysis tool The new software quickly measures and analyses power dissipation in power-supply switching devices and magnetic components, and then generates detailed test reports in customisable formats

TDSPWR2, when used with a Tektronix TDS5000 series digital phosphor oscilloscope and differential and current probes, forms a complete measurement system for power-supply design and test.

In order to improve the efficiency of switching power supplies with increased power densities, designers need to analyse power dissipation and characterise transitions at higher switching frequencies.

Using TDSPWR2's unique switching loss and B/H analysis features, users can measure switching and magnetic device power dissipation with a touch of a button.

The software will efficiently and accurately characterise switching waveforms and measure power loss at the switching device, with the TDS5000's bandwidth, sample rate and deep memory combined with the TDSPWR2 power dissipation analysis capability.

It is also possible to monitor operating limits and easily debug designs for reliability using the TDSPWR2's Safe Operating Area (SOA) facility, with mask testing capability and cursor linkage to related waveforms.

With current harmonic standards (EMC) being imposed worldwide to maximise the efficiency of the existing total generation capacity, compliance to the IEC 61000-3-2 standard is critical.

Designers can reduce their development and testing time by using the pre-compliance testing capability of TDSPWR2 to test power-supply designs to the EN61000-3-2 pre-compliance standard from the bench.

Units, scale factor, and 'de-skew' are automatically set for Tektronix TCP202 and TCPA300/400 AC/DC current measurement systems and Tektronix voltage probes.

In addition, TDSPWR2 allows manual setting for third-party current probes that are compatible with Tektronix oscilloscopes.
