Actively-shielded magnet expands NMR
choices

Bruker BioSpin announces the addition of a new 850 US 2 MHz standard bore (54mm) actively-shielded magnet to its successful line of ultra-high field NMR systems

The 850 US 2 is based on the same technology as the company's top-of-the-line 900 US 2, which has already been successfully installed for its first customer Ultra-high field NMR magnets are required for protein structure determination as well as for advanced NMR applications in materials research

Positioned above the field strength of existing 800 US 2 magnets, the new 850MHz US2 magnet structural biology and solid-state NMR researchers to push for ultra-high field NMR capabilities at intermediate budgets, while retaining the advantages of an actively-shielded magnets.

Bruker BioSpin has already received an order for this new system from the Max Planck Institute in Mainz, Germany.

"The expansion of the Bruker BioSpin line with an 850 MHz magnet is a cost-effective means of gaining access to ultra-high field NMR systems," remarked Professor Spiess, director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.

"The high magnetic field strength combined with Bruker BioSpin's new Avance II electronics open up new possibilities in our state-of-the-art polymer research".

The 850 US 2 combines Bruker BioSpin's proprietary UltraShield and UltraStabilized technologies.

UltraShield reduces the magnetic stray fields by an order of magnitude in volume over non-shielded magnets, creating a much smaller footprint than a conventional, non-shielded magnet.

UltraStabilized sub-cooled magnet technology enables the system to operate stably at reduced temperatures of approximately 2K.

"As the application of NMR technology continues to grow, particularly in protein research, more customers want the highest field strength magnets available," explains Razvan Teodorescu, manager of Bruker BioSpin's magnet division in North America.

"This new magnet fills the gap between the 800 and 900MHz US 2 systems, giving users another price point option.".
