A contract awarded to Byrum UK for fitting out laboratories at a new pharmaceutical company on Cambridge Science Park has resulted in two further projects from neighbouring companies

The original contract included biology, chemistry, class 2, NMR, wet and x-ray laboratories, a cold room and chemical storage at Astex Technology, the fragment-based drug discovery company Byrum, which specialises in high density modular furniture and storage for laboratories and hospitals, utilised the flexibility of its Proline furniture range by including mobile storage units with compact laminate worktops and under-slung epoxy sinks

Hygiene stations with wash-hand basins and emergency eye-wash stations were also included in the contract.

Wall cupboards were hung from the horizontal wall rail of the versatile Swedish Hyllteknik shelving system, exclusively distributed in the UK by Byrum.

The contract also included tall pass-through storage cupboards, able to be accessed from two directions, special x-ray consoles, and a purpose-designed service spine for a fermentation laboratory.

The main contractor for the Astex building was Haymills, the architect Charter, and the client's project manager Hannah Reed and Associates.

As a result of this collaboration, Byrum has won the contracts to fit out laboratories at two other Cambridge Science Park companies, Lorantis and Ionix.
