Portable mini FT spectrometer from CCL

CCL's innovative concept eliminates a lot of the complexity associated with existing systems and provides the simplicity of layout and component necessary for high volume, low cost manufacture

In a miniature prototype the critical optical function is performed by a single, optical fibre linked element.

The monolithic structure and absence of moving parts makes it extremely robust.

A significant advantage over competing technologies is the scope for high speed measurement that results from the high optical efficiency intrinsic to this class of spectrometer.

The spectrometers may be configured to operate in the UV through to IR regions of the spectrum.

CCL believes that this flexibility combined with the above features will enable subsequent developments to move in a number of different directions.

There is the potential to build low cost, portable versions for field measurement.

Alternatively there are a number of applications in diagnostic and security systems for which an OEM version of the spectrometer could be used.

Robert Jones who is leading the team responsible for the work points out that, "This breakthrough is the most recent to emerge from a much broader programme in short coherence interferometry which has already resulted in powerful new systems for the measurement of refractive index, film thickness and surface binding.

"Of particular importance is the fact that all our developments are supported by a comprehensive range of skills in signal processing and opto-mechanical design which enables us to bring optimum products to market.

"We are also commercially flexible in that we can licence our technology to external partners as well as develop it to meet their specific needs.".
