CE Instruments announce the availability of the ZetaCad, designed to measure the streaming potential on particles over 50um ID and flat surfaces

The standard cell is 15mm wide and from 10-150mm in length for samples 1mm thick (0.1mm option for membranes) The system allows fast automated measurement and sample rinse driven from Windows software

Streaming potential is measured by passing an electrolyte through a porous plug by a pressure gradient.

The excess charges around the particles or wall are carried along by the liquid.

Their accumulation downstream causes a build up of an electric field that drives an electric current back by ionic conduction through the liquid and against the direction of liquid flow.

A steady state is quickly reached and this is the streaming potential that can be simply measured.
