Electronic cams add nimbleness to lab instruments

A Copley Motion Systems product story
Edited by the Laboratorytalk editorial team Oct 17, 2005

Controller and powerful linear actuator provide an ultra-fast camming combination and offer low noise, high throughput alternative to belt-drives and ballscrews

Copley Controls's Xenus controllers feature a powerful camming mode.

The controllers work with Copley's high force, direct drive ServoTube actuators to translate cam lookup tables into fast-executing linear action.

Xenus/ServoTube camming provides a high performance alternative to belt drive and ballscrew mechanisms.

The actuator's superior acceleration and velocity raises throughput, its direct-drive simplicity eliminates the downtime caused by belt drive and ballscrew wear.

Silent operation keeps Osha at bay.

Flying shear - a material cutting machine based on electronic camming highlights the Xenus + ServoTube performance benefits, says Copley.

The machine achieves 'unprecedented' productivity by cutting sheets to length without stopping material flow.

Key to non-stop material travel is the machine's ability to slice sheets on the fly.

In operation, the knife carriage accelerates from rest to full material speed, travels in synchronism with the material, and then shears the sheets.

The blade and carriage retract immediately after shearing in readiness for the next sheet.

No alternative mechanism permits such high paper speed and productivity.

Mechanical cams - automated fabrication and production equipment - including material cutting machines - have traditionally depended on mechanical cams and gears to execute cutting, placing, filling, and other precisely timed functions.

Modern flexible manufacturing exploits the flexibility of electronic cams to add versatility and fine tuning to such actions.

Historically, changing a production run required the machinery to be shut down-incurring production loss-to enable technicians to mount fresh cams.

In contrast, electronic cams can be changed instantly.

Applications - electronic cams exploit Xenus/ServoTube power and versatility to improve productivity in packaging, food and beverage, material handling, medical, warehouse, and other automation systems.
