Adjustable capacity anion-exchange column

A Dionex product story
Edited by the Laboratorytalk editorial team Apr 5, 2002

Providing improved speed and efficiency in the separation of polyvalent species is said to be ideal ideal for the determination of inorganic anions in salt and acid matrices

Dionex has introduced the IonPac Cryptand A1 (3 x 150mm) adjustable capacity anion-exchange column designed for the separation of polyvalent anions.

This column is also ideal for the determination of inorganic anions in salt and acid matrices.

The Cryptand A1 column is a new advancement in Dionex resin technology.

The Cryptand-based anion exchanger allows column capacity control by changing the eluent cation content.

The Cryptand A1 column uses lithium, sodium or potassium hydroxide eluents, with each eluent producing a unique column capacity range.

The advantage of Cryptand technology is the ability to use capacity gradients to quickly and efficiently separate and elute mixtures of polyvalent species such as polyphosphates and polysulphonates.

This same principle can be applied to other separations such as common anions and polarisable anions including iodide, thiocyanate, thiosulphate and perchlorate.

These anions are typically very difficult to elute efficiently and quickly from traditional quaternary ammonium functionalised anion-exchange materials.

Adjustable column capacity also can be used in the determination of trace level anions in salts or concentrated acids where the major matrix component can be quickly eluted from the column by using a capacity gradient.

The IonPac Cryptand A1 column resin technology is based on a cryptand molecule, covalently attached to a macroporous, styrene divinylbenzene resin.

A cryptand is a bi-cyclic compound capable of complexing metal cations such as sodium, lithium and potassium.

This complex forms an anion exchange site.

Each metal produces a specific capacity range depending on the binding constant of the metal.
