Russ Swan, Editor, writes:

Hooray for the Advertising Standards Authority, which last week and at long last recommended that an advertisement designed purely to scare-monger about 'toxic chemicals' should be withdrawn.

The offending advertisement, published by the environmental lobby group WWF, had the provocative headline "Who cares where toxic chemicals end up?" The response to this asinine question has to be "Actually, we all do."

I had an enjoyable exchange with the well-known BBC Radio 4 presenter John Humprys a little while ago, in which I offered my own provocative question: "Will the BBC ever be able to run a story involving the process industries without prefacing the word 'chemical' with the word 'toxic'?" Humphrys is an extremely bright fellow, and a committed organic farmer in his spare time. His response was disappointing, invoking the mediaeval alchemist Paracelsus and his observation that everything is toxic, in sufficient quantities. On that basis, why does the BBC not preface every noun with 'toxic'? Are those floodwaters currently devastating Prague and Vienna not composed mostly of that well-known toxic chemical H20?

I would be interested to hear from any Laboratorytalk readers with examples of other offensive or inappropriate advertisements or uses of language, which I will be happy to share with the broader audience here.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of scientists and other laboratory professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Flexible detection for the molecular biology lab

Genios offers customers a competitively priced system with the advantage of three-in-one detection in one instrument (absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence). Recognising the unprecedented number of reaction vessel formats used by researchers, Genios has been designed to handle different microplate formats (6 to 384 wells), PCR tubes, and cuvettes making it the ideal solution for many standard molecular biology procedures.

4. "Chemical Printing" technology announced

Proteome Systems has announced the first results of its Chemical Inkjet Printing (ChIP) programme in the prestigious journal, Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. The article entitled: "High-throughput peptide mass fingerprinting and protein microarray analysis using chemical printing strategies" by Sloane et al, can be viewed as a "Paper in Press" at mcponline.org. This is a new approach to analysis of authentic proteins, including their modified forms, after two dimensional array and transfer onto membranes. The technology involves nanolitre microfluidic printing onto individual protein spots. Each arrayed protein becomes an archive for multiple analyses, either using enzymatic treatment (for example, peptide mass fingerprinting, N-glycoform analysis) or chemical cleavage (for example, O-glycoform analysis) and subsequent mass spectrometric analysis.

5. A different approach to the gas chromatograph

PerkinElmer's new Clarus 500 GC offers a totally different approach to working with a gas chromatograph. The user interface is an easy to use, full-colour touch screen, which can operate in seven different languages. The signal display shows a real-time chromatogram from either channel A or B to monitor a current analysis on-screen. The status display provides an overview of the system, with single-touch access to all functions, using intuitive, pictorial icons.

6. Ready-to-use assays for genetic screening

Applied Biosystems has launched Assays-on-Demand products, a comprehensive set of functionally validated, ready-to-use assays specifically for genetic screening. They provide accurate, reproducible data and allow researchers to screen a greater number of targets quickly, easily and cost-effectively. Dr Stefan Schreiber, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Kiel, Germany, has been testing the assays as part of an early access programme. "By using these assays for our systematic disease association studies, we can work effectively to identify possible mutations that may be associated with the predisposition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), sarcoidosis, psoriasis and peridontitis."
