musing in this column about the dissolution of the traditional
boundaries between various scientific disciplines. Modern chemistry is
conducted at the atomic or sub-atomic scale, for example in the design
of new catalysts. Biology (or 'biotechnology', as it is more
fashionably known) is today a molecular-level discipline, with
nanoscale surgery to cut and splice sections of DNA and other
interesting structures. Materials science can scarcely be
differentiated from chemistry, and all of the above intimately involve
mathematical and computer science. The days of scientific specialism,
I pondered, might be numbered.
Not everybody agrees. I
raised this very point with an eminent professor a few days ago,
during a coffee break at a meeting at the Royal Society. I could
almost see the blood rising. This was clearly an argument he had heard
before, and one he disagreed with. Not only were the disciplines not
merging, they couldn't and indeed shouldn't. The danger was that the
loss of specialism would mean the loss of expertise - that all
scientists would be expected to be 'jacks of all trades'. I was then
privileged to receive a mini-lecture on what was really happening at
the cutting edge of science: all this atomic and molecular level work
was not chemistry or biology, but physics. If anything, I was told,
the development of science today would mean that the other disciplines
would be recognised for what they were - sub-sets of physics.
He might be right, but I'm not wholly convinced. And I'm sure
I don't need to reveal which scientific discipline this particular
individual belongs to. I hope you find this issue of our
weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and
ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens
more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and
headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see
details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions
as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me
directly. Best wishes Russ Swan, Editor mailto:ru[-email removed-]orytalk.com ======================================================= OUR TOP
TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ======================================================= 1.
Portable gas chromatograph for on-site analyses Agilent
Technologies Europe has introduced the Agilent 3000 Micro gas
chromatograph portable, a small, easy-to-carry GC that does not
require an outside power source or external carrier gas supply. The
portable system is ideal for field work, test stations, pilot plants,
and process lines, and can run one or two channels simultaneously with
a single injection, producing laboratory-quality results.

materials catalogue from LGC Promochem for clinical, forensic and
toxicological analysis provides analysts in these fields with improved
access to certified reference materials from the world's leading
producers, including Cerilliant (formerly Radian), IRMM, Nist, and
Medichem. The catalogue, which is the second to be produced by LGC
Promochem, contains a number of newer matrix materials (blood, serum,
urine, hair, and now, drugs of abuse in saliva). It also includes a
range of other single and multi-analyte standards such as proteins,
enzymes, lipids, hormones, vitamins, trace elements (heavy metals) and
drugs of abuse, among others.

Laboratory handbook focuses on best practices Advances in
science are progressing rapidly and new technologies, new medicines,
and improved products are being introduced constantly to improve the
quality of life. Since most of these innovations were initiated in a
laboratory, the importance of productive laboratories has never been
greater. A new book from the American Society for Quality, A
Laboratory Quality Handbook of Best Practices and Relevant
Regulations, stresses the importance of following quality laboratory
practices in order to eliminate errors, increase production, and
maximise compliance with government regulations.
