boundaries between fact and fiction are increasingly blurred.
Entertainment masquerades as news in the most popular newspapers, and
for many people the on-screen antics of soap opera characters are more
important than real events around the world.
So I am
appalled by today's news that the Royal Society of Chemistry is
awarding an Honorary Fellowship to a fictional character. Sherlock
Holmes is credited, says RSC, with being the first detective to use
chemical science as a means of detection. Wrong. He never existed, so
he can hardly have made any contribution to anything. If RSC wanted to
recognise anybody, it could have - should have - bestowed its honours
on the author and creator of Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, not his
fictitious creation.
RSC's cheap publicity stunt will
achieve its aim of garnering coverage of the Society. But this is
coverage based on ridicule, rather than respect. The Society has also
managed to diminish the value of all RSC Fellowships, now and in the
future. This was once a highly prestigious award, reserved for the
greatest of practitioners of chemistry. Who will be next to join the
pantheon of Honorary Fellows? Homer Simpson, recognised for his
contribution to nuclear safety?
Today's news marks a new
low in the desperation of some elements of the science establishment
to appear interesting to the general public. Science can be made
interesting without resorting to reality-blurring tactics of tawdry
tabloid newspapers, and we should expect our learned societies to be
setting a better example than this. I hope you find this
issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new
products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our
website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you
can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the
summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email
alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any
suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better,
email me directly. Best wishes Russ Swan, Editor mailto:ru[-email removed-]orytalk.com ======================================================= OUR TOP
TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ======================================================= 1.
Microscissors for precise dissection Lumsden BioScissors
are a unique tool specifically designed for performing fine
microdissection of slippery embryonic and neuronal tissue with ease
and precision. The secret to their functionality lies in the
hand-crafted pivotless blades which cut from the tips backwards
(unlike any other scissors). In practice this means that dissection
can be much more accurately controlled as well as more clearly
visible. The scissors are easily operated with only one hand (unlike
tungsten needles), leaving the other hand free for refocusing the
microscope during dissection.

Spectrophotometer offers wavelength, time scanning The new
U-1800 UV/Vis instrument from Hitachi is an entry-level, self
contained unit with a large, high resolution LCD, new control software
and a four-cell changer as standard. This extremely versatile
instrument has wavelength scanning, time scanning, photometry and
ratio measurement capabilities packed into a small (A3) size
footprint.

Bubble free, trouble free solvent degassing CSI's 6150
range of vacuum degassers provides efficient, effective solvent
degassing without the inconvenience, expense and potential hazards of
helium degassing. The CSI vacuum degassers use only electrical power,
require no gas supplies and no solvent vapours can escape to the
laboratory atmosphere.

Platelet function assessed rapidly The revolutionary
PFA-100 analyser from Sysmex UK rapidly assesses platelet function and
enables the reliable detection of inherited, acquired and induced
platelet disorders. Easy to use with results available in less than
five minutes, the PFA-100 has been designed to provide information
quickly and accurately using an extremely simple test principle. No
sample preparation or operator training is required, and the system
can conveniently analyse less than 1ml of citrated whole blood for up
to four hours post-venipuncture.

Toxic effects of chemicals on aquatic organisms Aquire
contains scientific papers published both nationally and
internationally on the toxic effects of chemicals to aquatic organisms
and plants. Aquire covers toxic effect data, including lethal,
sublethal, and residue effects, on all aquatic species including
plants and animals and freshwater and saltwater species. Amphibians
are included in Aquire, with the life stages that exist exclusively in
the water, eg, tadpole.

improvements to graphical data acquisition DasyLab 7.0
enables users without the time for programming to create the perfect
on-screen control panel and information display, and handle the
interface to their data acquisition hardware at the same time. DasyLab
features an excellent 'getting started' tutorial as well as a long
list of improvements to the working environment. It has also been
fully tested with Windows XP.

Microscopy relief contrast system A new technique
developed by Olympus called Relief Contrast (RC) gives an adjustable
three dimensional highlighting of relief features. This simplifies the
functional positioning of living cells before electrodes,
micro-injectors and micromanipulators are put in place - particularly
valuable for ICSI, other IVF techniques, and transgenic work.

cost real time x-ray inspection This compact benchtop
system offers a breakthrough in cost-effective and easy to use, real
time x-ray inspection. By making high resolution, real time microfocus
x-ray more affordable than ever before, X-Tek says the Linx is set to
rock the market with a base price of only £37,500. It is ideally
suited to a broad range of applications including BGA, µBGA, and flip
chip inspection and is expected to be of particular appeal to rework
houses, universities, research laboratories and general inspection
facilities.
