Russ Swan, Editor, writes: With so many disturbing
stories in the news in the last couple of weeks, I thought
Laboratorytalk readers might appreciate something a little more
frivolous this week.
A few days ago, UK defence minister
Geoff Hoon - or, as he is known in the House of Commons, Geoff Who? -
rose in the chamber to discuss the current war in Iraq. Among his
insights was the comment that the town of Um-Qasr "is a bit like
Southampton".
A reporter in the field heard the comment,
and approached a couple of soldiers to see if they agreed. The first
observed that Hoon had either obviously never been to Um-Qasr, or had
never been to Southampton. "Yes," his fellow squaddie agreed, "There's
no beer, no prostitutes, and the people are shooting at us. It's more
like Portsmouth."
I hope you find this issue of our weekly
newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas
featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more
being added daily, so do take a look if you can. Alternatively,
the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this
newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In
the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the
site or the newsletter better, email me directly. Best

TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION ======================================================= 1.
World's first personal cell analysis system Available from
Guava Technologies, the PCA is claimed to be the world's first
personal cell analysis system, enabling scientists engaged in
cell-based discovery to easily perform advanced assays with fewer
cells than required by other methods. Using samples only a few
microlitres in volume, experiments can be started sooner and finished
faster, streamlining the entire R and D process.

particle analyser Spectra-Physics introduces a new
instrument for nano particle research and testing - the Triple-S Oriel
fine particle analyser - that provides scientists and engineers with
critical information about sub-micron materials through advanced
optical technologies. The compact benchtop unit measures the size,
shape, and structure of particles from 50nm to 2µm by employing a
patent-pending method of particle characterisation based on
elliptically polarised light scattering.

Parallel capillary/nano LC separations Dionex has
introduced a new dual gradient capillary/nano LC system that allows
for parallel capillary/nano LC separations. The dual gradient system
provides powerful identification of peptides for pharmaceutical,
research and other applications. By coupling this system to
NanoSpray/MS, the throughput of the MS can be increased by about 100%.

eliminates pathogens in hospital air ducts In a 12-month
study carried out at leading UK hospital, ultraviolet (UV)
disinfection systems from Hanovia achieved a 98.9% reduction of
Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and other
airborne pathogens within the hospital's air conditioning system.

Lighting the way for reproduction The launch of a laser
microdissection system from Carl Zeiss is helping to resolve some of
the remaining issues in embryo development research and in vitro
fertilisation. Palm (positioning and ablation with laser microbeams)
allows the precise cutting and movement of specimens without the need
for physical contact and eliminates the risk of contamination being
introduced by the scientist or technician.

Ultrasonic spectrometry goes HTP Ultrasonic Scientific
introduces its first major product launch of the year with its new
HR-US HTP high throughput spectrometer. The HR-US HTP (high resolution
ultrasonic spectrometer - high through put) greatly improves
throughput and productivity for routine or higher volume applications
and has the added capability of semi-automated sample introduction.
This allows for the fast filling, emptying and cleaning of the
ultrasonic cells.

Transfection reagent for antisense oligos Cambridge
BioScience has added Cytofectin transfection reagent for antisense
oligonucleotides from Gene Therapy Systems to its range of gene
delivery products. Cytofectin transfection reagent delivers
oligonucleotides efficiently into a broad spectrum of cell lines and
alleviates the two problems commonly associated with lipid-mediated
delivery of antisense oligos - poor transfection efficiency and high
levels of cytotoxicity.

Improved TOC analyser to monitor contamination This unit
measures the organic contamination in a process liquid, a waste water
stream or condensate return lines, which can indicate the loss of raw
material, environmental hazards or damage to capital equipment.
Typical applications would occur in the food and beverage industry,
the semiconductor industry, nuclear and fossil fuel plants, and
wastewater treatment plants.
