...And take a look at these stories too... ======================================================= Russ Swan, Editor, writes: Those of you who read your
Laboratorytalk newsletter promptly may like to note that, just about
now, the planet Mars is making its closest approach to Earth for about
60,000 years. This has been a popular story in the last week or so,
spiced up by the progress of the flotilla of four spacecraft currently
on their way to the fourth rock from the sun.
What is less
widely reported is that this closest approach is hardly closer than
previous encounters. I read that at its closest, occurring at 09:51 UT
(10:51 BST) today, Mars will have an apparent diameter of 25 seconds
of arc - about the same as a tennis ball at a distance of 528m. But a
similar approach in 1924 was, on this scale, just 18cm more distant.
In other words, the planet is only about one Mars diameter closer than
then.
I was disappointed to find heavy cloud cover over
Laboratorytalk Towers in the last few days, meaning that I could not
use my rather poor home-made telescope to see the planet. But I have
done some rough calculations, and was pleased to note that the place
on Earth which will be closest to Mars during the encounter is
probably Hawaii, home of several significant observatories. It seems
appropriate that the human being who is closer to Mars than any other
since the emergence of modern home sapiens is probably some scientist
atop an observatory dome on the island. Here's hoping for clearer
weather over the UK tonight.
I have had some interesting
responses to my comments last week about the golden age of science,
and will return to that topic next week. In the
meantime, I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful.
In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there
are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so
do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories
behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be
retrieved by email alone: see details below. If you have any
suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better,
email me directly. Best wishes Russ Swan, Editor mailto:ne[-email removed-]orytalk.com =======================================================

Simultaneous screening of transcription factors Cambridge
BioScience's range of TranSignal arrays now includes the TranSignal
protein/DNA arrays I and II. These transcriptional regulation assays
can be combined to screen a total of 150 unique transcription factors
simultaneously. This allows determination of active transcription
factors in a cell or tissue sample in a single experiment.

Stepping out and taking control Prior Scientific has added
the Prior PCI stepper motor controller to its range of microscope
automation products. This new controller has been designed to drive
any combination of scanning stage, focus motor, filter wheel and
shutters, all from a PC. The PCI stepper motor controller may be
quickly and simply installed directly into any standard full size PCI
slot, thus eliminating the need for a separate controller box. This
has the immediate advantage of saving valuable workspace in the lab.

Handwriting analysis leads to diagnosis In a study funded
by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development,
Littleton Meeks of Meeks Associates used a computer to analyse the
handwriting of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD). These studies have looked at handwriting of children when they
are unmedicated and medicated using Ritalin. Meeks is hoping to
develop a test instrument to diagnose ADHD, as well as evaluate the
effects of Ritalin on handwriting, perhaps providing an algorithm to
allow a proper dosage level to be set for an individual child.

Intrinsically safe hand-held gamma monitor Southern
Scientific has introduced to the UK a new version of the popular
6150AD series of hand-held, gamma radiation dose/doserate meters that
is fully certified, intrinsically safe and approved for use in areas
containing explosive hazards. Known as the 6150AD5/Ex, it has a range
of up to 1Sv/h reading in ambient dose equivalent quantity, H*(10) and
for lower dose/doserate applications an intrinsically safe probe and
cable can be attached with a range of 0-10mSv/h.
