Russ Swan, Editor, writes:
I am at a loss to know
what to make of this morning's news about the Nuffield Council on
Bioethics and its report on animal testing. After a two-year study,
consulting with the leading authorities in science and the advocates
of an end to all live experiments, the council produced its report
today. But I'm not sure why it bothered.
Animal testing is
a hot topic. Cambridge University last year abandoned plans to build a
new neuroscience laboratory, citing the additional security costs due
to animal rights activists. Oxford University had to find new
contractors for its new animal research lab after the original
contractor was intimidated by activists.
So what does the
Nuffield report tell us? Precious little. Testing is necessary, it
says, but it would be better if alternatives could be found (well,
that was two years well spent). Its only real conclusion is that
researchers should be more open about the experiments they perform.
What a strange idea! They are saying, in effect, that because the work
done in some labs could lead to physical violence against researchers,
those researchers should talk more about their work.
But we
should reserve our real scorn for the UK government, which set up the
Centre for Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction of Animals in
Research, just a year ago. It was given a budget of just £660,000, and
today has been awarded £3million for the period 2006-2008. This is a
derisory amount of money to spend on such a potentially important area
of science. It will pay for little other than a few more committee
meetings and a few more inconclusive and pointless reports.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
thousands more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do
take a look if you can. Alternatively, the full stories behind all the
summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email
alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any
suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better,
email me directly.

OUR TOP NEW PRODUCT SELECTION ====================================================================
[1] A NEW WORLD OF SPECTRAL IMAGING (Nikon UK, 20 May
2005)
Nikon says that with its Digital Eclipse C1si
spectral laser confocal system, the quality of images obtained from
multiple fluorescence probes within a sample, particularly in live
cell biology, are now dramatically improved. This is because Nikon's
new confocal technology acquires high resolution data, over a spectral
range of 400-750nm, in a single scan. This provides the researcher
with super fast, high quality, and continuous spectral imaging
content.

[2] FAST PLATE WORK WITHOUT ROBOTS (Anachem Bioscience, 25
May 2005)
Anachem says its 16-channel pipette is the
perfect solution for rapid, manual filling of 384 well plates without
the need for large robotic liquid handling systems. It is described as
ideal for assay development and pilot experiment and anyone performing
screening tests in the 384 well format. It provides flexibility during
development stages while still providing high throughput
productivity.

[3] ONE CLICK IMAGING OF ANY CHEMILUMINESCENT BLOT (Syngene, 19 May 2005)
Syngene introduces its new range
of GeneGnome automated image analysers, designed to make imaging
chemiluminescent samples both quick and simple. The new GeneGnome
comes complete with a 16 bit cooled camera inside a compact, light
tight cabinet and a new white light source for the added flexibility
of imaging coloured markers. The camera is fully integrated to a
processor and flat screen monitor for easy sample viewing and utilises
the multiplexing capabilities of the system for fast and accurate
molecular weight analysis.

[4] SUPERHEATED WATER AS HPLC MOBILE PHASE (Selerity
Technologies, 19 May 2005)
Selerity Technologies has
developed a new interface for its Aquachrom 'green machine', the first
instrument to use superheated water as the mobile phase for HPLC
separations. The new interface has been designed to take advantage of
the full benefits of the flame ionisation detector (FID) by
controlling the water eluent as it enters the detector. The new
interface ensures that a blast or stream of water does not extinguish
the flame during a run.

[5] FIVE-SEGMENT BSD FOR VARIABLE PRESSURE SEM (Hitachi
High-Technologies, 23 May 2005)
A five-segment
semiconductor backscattered electron detector (BSD) with high
sensitivity and fast response rates has been introduced for the
S-3400N variable pressure scanning electron microscope (SEM) from
Hitachi High-Technologies. The detector can be used for both variable
pressure and high vacuum imaging. This new detector is said to give
exceptional sensitivity, especially at low accelerating voltages.

[6] X-RAY DETECTOR DELIVERS UNIQUE THIN FILM ANALYSIS (Thermo Electron (microanalysis), 20 May 2005)
Thermo
Electron announces new X-ray detector options for its MicroXRT line of
microbeam X-ray fluorescence metrology systems, enabling a unique
level of analysis for thin film applications in the semiconductor and
microelectronics industries. Microbeam XRF combines a technique known
for non-destructive, multi-element measurements, energy dispersive
X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy, with focusing optics to
create a tool designed specifically for thin metallic film
metrology.
