Novel detector wins R and D award

The company set out to develop the first truly universal detector for HPLC capable of performing the kind of rigorous, repeatable qualitative and quantitative analyses

ESA Biosciences reports that R and D Magazine has selected the Corona Cad (charged aerosol detector) for its prestigious 2005 R and D 100 Award The Corona is described as a breakthrough universal detector technology for HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography)

Dubbed 'the Oscars of invention' by the Chicago Tribune, the winning of an R and D 100 award "provides a mark of excellence known to industry, government, and academia as proof that the product is one of the most innovative ideas of the year," according to Tim Studt, editor-in-chief of R and D magazine.

This is the second time since its introduction in October 2004 that the Corona has received high honours.

This past March, the Corona won the 2005 Silver Pittcon editors' award for best new product.

"We are thrilled to become a member of this elite group of R and D 100 award winners, which includes products as diverse as the automated teller machine (1973) and the anti-smoking patch (1992)," said ESA President Walter DiGiusto.

"I would like to thank all those who worked on this important product - and that includes our customers who provided valuable input throughout its development, first outlining what their ideal instrument would comprise, and then testing to ensure that the Corona met their rigorous demands".

According to ESA vice president of sales and marketing John Christensen, recognising the significant limitations of currently available technology, the company set out to develop the first truly universal detector for HPLC capable of performing the kind of rigorous, repeatable qualitative and quantitative analyses that pharmaceutical and other-industry customers require.

"In pharmaceutical applications - where identification of contaminants, or a precise understanding of how and why a compound degrades, or an exact quantitation of active and inactive ingredients can literally be a matter of life and death - manufacturers have had to rely on imprecise tools that can only illuminate part of the equation.

"Our customers were looking for more-complete answers so they could leave the guesswork out of their critical decisions affecting the public's health and well-being and their companies' reputation and bottom line".
