Fluorescence detection of DNA
GRI has announced the UK launch of the DNA Engine Opticon, a continuous fluorescence detection system from MJ Research which can analyse 96 samples simultaneously
The DNA Engine Opticon combines state-of-the-art fluorescence detection with easy to use software 96 individual LEDs along with a highly sensitive photomultiplier tube allow the Opticon to rapidly detect and quantify samples in real time

The DNA Engine Opticon continuous fluorescence detection system incorporates a PTC 200 DNA Engine Peltier thermal cycler to provide all of the thermal performance characteristics required for real time analysis.
The new Opticon features an array of 96 LEDs that individually illuminate up to 96 samples allowing the user to accurately perform both real time quantitative and melting curve analysis.
The ability to quantify samples against known standards during cycling and then analyse melting curves to specifically identify products is of tremendous benefit to molecular analysts.
Optimisation of annealing and denaturation temperatures can be carried out in a single experiment using the gradient capability of the Opticon.
This feature will save time and expensive reagents when establishing protocols.
The high signal-to-noise ratio of the Opticon permits detection of fluorescein down to 5nM.
When coupled to the large dynamic linear range of seven orders of magnitude, the Opticon does not require any dilution of reagents over a broad range of concentrations, and can still detect a single template copy.
The DNA Engine Opticon is a single-colour device compatible with popular dye chemistries including Sybr Green dye, TaqMan probes and molecular beacons.
The Opticon excites fluorescent dyes with absorption spectra in the 450 to 495nm range.
The system is optimised for dyes with emission spectra in the 515 to 545nm range.
