Novozymes North America and Groton Biosystems have entered into a collaboration to develop online process monitoring capabilities for Novozymes's biofuels customers

These state-of-the-art monitors will be critical for enzyme and ethanol yield optimisation The collaboration will provide automated, near real-time online monitoring to commercial fuel ethanol plants

This technology will enable plants to monitor sugars, ethanol and organic acids in multiple fermentation tanks using Groton Biosystems's unique and proprietary process for sampling high-solids, high-viscosity fluids in biofuel production applications.

"This agreement between Novozymes and Groton Biosystems will provide commercial fuel ethanol plants with a state-of-the-art automated system solution that will dramatically improve efficiency in sample analysis," said Groton CEO Bill Dinardo.

"The ability to continuously sample and analyse the fermentation process will increase the efficiency and productivity of the fuel ethanol process".

"By utilising these advanced process monitoring capabilities," noted Novozymes marketing manager Jack Rogers, "our customers will be able to more fully exploit the performance of our enzymes to achieve improved throughput and yield".

Novozymes is active in industrial biotechnology and has been instrumental in revolutionising the production of transportation fuel through application of its enzyme technology for ethanol production from corn starch.

Going forward, Novozymes is committed to supporting the world with sustainable, biological solutions that create the necessary balance between better business, a cleaner environment and better lives.

To this end, Novozymes enzyme technology is poised to play a key role in the conversion of biomass-to-ethanol for development of second-generation, clean-burning biofuel alternatives.

Groton Biosystems is a pioneer in providing fermentation and cell culture production companies with leading edge online monitoring solutions.

Groton offers the most cost-effective solutions for monitoring the entire research and manufacturing process.
