The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and John Wiley and Sons, have announced a collaborative agreement to launch Infopoems for Hospitalists in spring 2007

Infopoems for Hospitalists will publish in print on a bi-monthly basis in a stand-alone publication that will mail with the Journal of Hospital Medicine, the official peer-reviewed and Medline indexed journal of SHM; in addition, hospitalist physicians who are SHM members will receive syndicated Poems by email to support them in providing general medical care for hospitalised patients Poem is an acronym for Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters

Infopoems are summaries of evidence-based medical research filtered from over 120 leading peer-reviewed journals graded for validity and relevance to patient outcomes.

Approximately one in 40 eligible studies is converted into a Poem and each Poem is reviewed by at least 15 physicians and/or physician editors prior to publication.

Wiley acquired Infopoem, a provider of evidence-based medical content and web-based search tools, in October 2005.

The flagship services of Infopoems form the basis of a medical information management system that improves patient care and increases clinical efficiency.

Poems are published in many of the world's leading medical journals and are highly regarded for their utility and quality in keeping clinicians up-to-date on the latest and most relevant evidence published in the medical literature.

"Hospitalists are on the front line of clinical care and are early adopters of best practices such as evidence-based medicine and clinical decision-making enabled by technology," said Shawn Morton, vice president and publishing director of medicine at Wiley.

"Poems are high quality evidence available through multiple channels, including at the point of care via pocket PCs and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

"We see great potential in this marriage of hospital medicine and evidence-based content in print plus digital formats".

"The Society of Hospital Medicine is committed to providing our members with the most useful, relevant medical information to support effective clinical decisions and, ultimately, to promote higher quality care for hospitalised patients," said Laurence Wellikson, chief executive officer of SHM.

"Delivering Infopoems to our members is another example of this commitment and our dedication to bettering the hospital medicine specialty.".
