Scholarship winner announced
Marc Burrell, a student of bioengineering at Rice University, has focused on biomedical optics, medical imaging and signal processing including MRI for patients with implantable cardiac devices
SPIE (International Society for Optical Engineering) recently announced that Marc Burrell is this year's recipient of the prestigious DJ Lovell Scholarship, a student award funded, in part, by Labsphere Burrell is a student of bioengineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas where he has focused on biomedical optics, medical imaging and signal processing with a focus on magnetic resonance imaging for patients with implantable cardiac devices

The $7000 DJ Lovell award is the organisation's most prestigious and recognises students who are likely to make a long-range contribution to optics, photonics, or a related field.
Marc Burrell, an undergraduate, has already published research, applied for several patents, and won science competition sponsors including Intel, General Electric, and Siemens Westinghouse.
Labsphere has contributed funds for the DJ Lovell Scholarship since its inception in 1986.
"Labsphere is dedicated to innovation in optics and photonics," said Tim Kardish, Labsphere general manager.
"It's a pleasure to support students like Marc Burrell who show such promise in optics engineering; especially those who are applying technology to advances in medical science".
The 2005 DJ Lovell Scholarship will be presented at the SPIE annual awards banquet on 3 August in San Diego, California.
