Automatic penetrometer tests semi-solids

A Labtex product story
Edited by the Laboratorytalk editorial team May 28, 2007

The PNR 12 from Petrotest Instruments rapidly provides information about the texture or consistency of a wide variety of semi-solid products

Historically used to gain information about the plasticity, elasticity and solidification of greases, waxes and bitumen in the petroleum industry, Petrotest penetrometers have gained a wide application range including the consistency of butter, margarine and other edible fats, in cosmetic and pharmaceuticals manufacturing to test ointments and creams, in the dairy industries for the examination yoghurts and cheeses and to examine the freshness or ageing of fruit and other foodstuffs.

The PNR 12 is a compact, microcomputer driven bench top unit with a large graphic display and an intuitive control menu structure.

A needle, cone or other rod of known dimensions and weight penetrates a product sample under gravity, for a predetermined length of time, and the penetration depth is recorded.

The resulting figure can then be used as the basis for controls in product development and for quality control.

In 'standard mode' the surface of the sample is located manually using a hand wheel.

Alternatively electronic positioning can be used for known samples using the PNR 12 memory function.

For samples which need to be under water there is also the unique surface detection system which uses a conductivity sensor.

The PNR 12 has a measurement range of 0-55mm and the test duration can be selected between 0.1 and 9999.9 seconds.

Results can be printed or downloaded to a USB memory stick.
