Seeing the light in ENT surgery
Praise for the quality of optics on surgical microscopes used at the ear nose and throat department of Southmead Hospital, Bristol
Surgeons in the University Department of ENT, Bristol, have used surgical microscopes from Leica Microsystems for several years, adding the latest system, a Leica MS1, two years ago Phillip Robinson, director of otolaryngology and consultant ENT surgeon at Southmead Hospital, said: "I use the MS1 primarily for microsurgery of the ear and my colleagues use it with the double headed eyepieces for head and neck cancer surgery
It has excellent optics, a good depth of field and good magnification." James Lewis from Leica believes that the success of Leica's surgical microscopes lies in their good light transmission: "The quality of both the glass used in the lenses and the coatings on those lenses ensures that there is plenty of light, even in the most demanding operating situations.
The result is a very bright view with excellent colour rendition.".
