Micromeritics: instruments for particle size, surface area, porosity, and density

Micromeritics manufactures a broad line of automated analytical laboratory instruments that measure the physical characteristics of powders and solids for fundamental research, product development, quality assurance and control, production, and process control applications.

Micromeritics was founded over forty years ago to fulfill the analytical instrumentation needs of industrial and academic laboratories involved in the emerging field of particle science and technology. The company manufactures a broad line of automated analytical laboratory instruments that measure the physical characteristics of powders and solids for fundamental research, product development, quality assurance and control, production, and process control applications, including the expanding area of nanoscience. Physical characteristics determined include:

? Particle Size
? Surface Area
? Pore Volume, Pore Size and Pore Size Distribution
? Absolute Density, Envelope Density, and Bulk Density
? Catalytic Activity, Active Surface Area, and Strength of Adsorption Sites

Particle Size Analyzers

Micromeritics offers a variety of particle size analyzers that are based on different techniques.

? Saturn DigiSizerŽ 5200 - Utilizing a solid-state laser and high-resolution CCD detector to capture the light scattering pattern, this instrument automatically determines particle sizes ranging from 0.1 to 1000 micrometers in just minutes. Options include fully automated sampling, low-volume sample handling systems, and autosampler.
? SediGraph? III 5120 - Measures mass by X-ray absorption and particle size by sedimentation in the size range of 0.1 to 300 micrometers? no modeling is required. Complete particle accountability assures that all the introduced sample is accounted for, including any fraction outside the range of the instrument.
? ElzoneŽ II 5390 - Utilizes the powerful electrical sensing zone method to determine quickly and accurately the size, number, concentration, and mass of a wide variety of organic and inorganic materials. Automated features include: start-up, run and shut-down routines; blockage detection and clearing; flushing/rinsing; and calibration.

Surface Area Analyzers

Micromeritics offers a large selection of gas adsorption analyzers to fulfill almost any surface area and porosity need.

? ASAP? 2020 Accelerated Surface Area and Porosimetry System - Contains a multitude of data reduction methods and can be upgraded to perform micropore and chemisorption analyses without requiring additional bench space. Adsorption and desorption analyses can be performed with a variety of adsorptives, including vapors.
? ASAP? 2420 Accelerated Surface Area and Porosimetry System - With six independently operated preparation and analysis ports, a new analysis can begin as soon as another is finished. This provides an important advantage over many multi-port instruments that require all samples to be prepared or analysed at the same time. A key, standard feature of the ASAP 2420 is a programmable and fully automated Sample Preparation module with twelve independently operated ports.
? The TriStar? 3000 - Allows simultaneous and independent analysis of up to three samples.
? Gemini? V Series - Perform rapid single-point and multipoint BET and Langmuir surface area measurements, as well as total pore volume analysis.
? FlowSorb? III - Manual instrument for single-point and multipoint BET surface area measurements using a flowing gas method.

Porosimeters

? AutoPore? IV Series - Uses mercury intrusion to determine pore size distribution, total pore volume, pore surface area, percent porosity, bulk density, skeletal density, permeability, and compressibility.

Pycnometers

Measuring volume of displaced medium (i.e. gas, liquid, or powder) comprises the basic technique of pycnometry.

? AccuPyc? 1330 - Uses the gas displacement technique to determine absolute volume of solids and powders.
? GeoPyc? 1360 - Uses the displacement of a patented DryFloŽ medium to determine envelope volume of solid materials. The GeoPyc automatically calculates the total pore volume when the skeletal volume is known (as determined by the AccuPyc 1330), and is nondestructive for most samples.

Chemisorption Analyzers

Chemical adsorption analysis techniques provide much of the information necessary to evaluate today's catalytic materials in the design and production phases, as well as after a period of use.

? AutoChem? II 2920 - performs a full array of highly precise, temperature-programmed and chemisorption studies. The instrument automatically performs pulse chemisorption and temperature-programmed measurements: reduction (TPR), desorption (TPD), oxidation (TPO), as well as BET surface area.
? ChemiSorb? Series - combines the ability to perform both physical adsorption and chemisorption measurements in a low-cost and upgradeable system.

Micromeritics also operates Micromeritics Analytical Services, a full service particle testing laboratory that provides sample analyses on a contract basis. Working in conjunction with Micromeritics Analytical Services is the European Micromeritics Analytical Services group.

With U.S. corporate headquarters in Norcross (Atlanta), Georgia, Micromeritics has an extensive worldwide sales and service network. The company operates direct offices located in the United States, England, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, and China. In addition, the company's customers are served by a specially trained local representative network covering over sixty-five countries who both sell and service Micromeritics' instruments. A training facility at the Norcross headquarters offers a regular schedule of instrument operator training courses.

Micromeritics is an ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturer and strives continually to improve the quality of its products. The company makes use of the latest design and production technology, including a computer-aided design and manufacturing system. This system allows Micromeritics' engineers to check designs and tolerances before parts are built, reducing cycle time and increasing instrument reliability. A large percentage of the precision-machined parts needed for its instruments are fabricated in Micromeritics' own machine shop. Micromeritics' instruments are tested rigorously to ensure the results they produce match accepted international standards. The company is continually in the process of designing and upgrading powerful multi-tasking instrument software, including software that addresses the many requirements specified by the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 regulations for data integrity and security. IQ and OQ services are also available to insure that each Micromeritics system is validated for accuracy, reliability, consistent intended performance, and provides safeguards to protect the integrity of analysis records. The company employs a full staff of engineers and scientists dedicated to ensuring development and support of superior particle characterization instruments.

Internationally, Micromeritics has provided particle characterization instruments and applications support to most of the world's top industrial companies and academic institutions whose applications include: catalysts and catalyst support systems, ceramics, clays, pharmaceuticals, pigments, plastics, paper coatings, geological cores, and metal powders, to name a few.
