Fast economical separations from
fermentation runs
Separating the liquid-solid mixes resulting from a fermentation run can prove time consuming and costly in terms of disposables such as cross-flow filters or membranes
New Brunswick Scientific offers a fast and economical alternative method for separations from fermentation runs with the Cepa LE, a tubular bowl semi-continuous centrifuge that can process many times the capacity of its separation chamber The design allows continuous feeding of a solid-liquid mixture from, for example, an E coli fermentation run while simultaneously expelling the liquid component

The cell mass remains in the bowl and the clarified liquid is collected from the exit port while the machine is running.
Plastic liners can be used to simplify cell paste removal.
This process is fast too.
In a typical application, the Cepa LE model separated 4.2 litres of E coli fermentation broth containing 6% solids by volume in just 24 minutes.
193 grams of cell paste were collected and supernatant clarity was excellent with all samples containing less than 0.1% solids.
The evaluation paper is available on request.
This benchtop centrifuge is quick to set up and clean because of its accessible design and there is no mid-run degradation due to clogged filters.
For large volumes the simple set-up and consistent performance means minimal downtime between separations.
Alternative bowls can be supplied for mixtures with extremely high solids concentrations, for emulsification, clarification and separating liquids of different densities.
A cooling coil is available as an optional accessory.
