Scientific voices of China
Two events will feature talks by leading scientists of Chinese origin discussing the challenges facing the scientific community in China to produce world-class research
Nature Publishing Group will hold two public forums in China in November 2004 to celebrate the publication on 18 November 2004 of a special Chinese language supplement in Nature, China Voices II: Keeping pace with change The two forums, which will be open to the Chinese scientific community, will take place in Shanghai, on 22 November, and in Shenzhen the following day on 23 November

The Shanghai meeting is being held with the cooperation of the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS, and the Shenzhen event is held in cooperation with the Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University and the University Town of Shenzhen.
Both forums will be known as the Nature China Voices Forum.
The two events will feature talks by leading scientists of Chinese origin discussing the challenges facing the scientific community in China to produce world-class research.
Speakers will include David Ho from the Aaron Diamond Aids Research Center, who will speak about the challenge China faces dealing with major microbiol threats; Mu-ming Poo, of the Institute of Neuroscience, Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences, who will talk on the cross cultural issues involved in establishing new research institutes in China; Pei Gang, president, Shanghai Institutes of Biological Science, who will speak on mid-to-long term science planning and development in China; Bruce Lahn, of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Chicago, who will speak on how China can utilise its limited financial and human resources to establish international leadership in niche areas; and RuiPing Xiao, Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science, National Institutes of Health who will speak on China's potential to advance in translational biomedical research.
Philip Campbell, Nature's editor-in-chief, will open the two events.
China Voices II: Keeping pace with change is the second supplement in a series of Chinese language supplements published by NPG.
The first, China Voices was published on 18 December 2003, and explored China's scientific prowess and potential from the point of view of Chinese-born scientists working in the West.
China Voices II: Keeping pace with change further develops these themes, expressing the views of Chinese scientists actually working in China.
