Excimer-based laser ablation for mass
spectrometry
For solid sampling of opaque and highly transmissive materials including quartz, diamonds and gemstones, and geochemical analysis of fluid inclusions, zircons, calcite, apatite and basalt
New Wave Research, a manufacturer of laser ablation systems for mass spectrometry applications, introduces the UP193HE, an excimer-based laser ablation system designed for solid sampling introduction to ICP, ICP-MS, noble gas MS and stable isotope MS instruments The system is ideal for solid sampling of opaque and highly transmissive materials including quartz, diamonds and gemstones, and for geochemical analysis of fluid inclusions, zircons, calcite, apatite and basalt

Features a twin laser head design that produces high repetition rates and enables users to capture more data sets during studies of flow phenomena
The UP193HE features high energy density at the sample-up to 40J/cm2-and can target micro-features such as defects and inclusions with spots as small as 4µm in diameter without fracturing the sample surface.
In addition, the energy is evenly spread across the profile of the laser beam, improving control over the laser process and leading to better shot-to-shot precision, particularly useful for depth profiling and fluid inclusion analysis.
Each system incorporates an exceptionally stable, air-cooled, 150mJ excimer laser from TuiLaser, a high-magnification video system, sub-micron precision stages, F/O illumination, cross polarisers and an ICP/ICP-MS sample chamber.
The system also includes New Wave Research's Merchantek software, which enables control of the ablation process via the mass spectrometer computer.
The software offers users a wide variety of ablation methods such as depth profiling and raster scanning for bulk analysis.
It controls all laser parameters, sample viewing and stage positioning and has many unique features such as sample contour following and tilt correction, sample mosaic navigation and alphanumeric character marking.
It is compatible with Windows 98, 2000, NT and XP operating systems.
