Culture medium for water quality monitoring
Oxoid has launched its water plate count agar, a medium to permit the enumeration of culturable micro-organisms from water using a colony count technique
The reformulated supplement achieves the same level of performance as the cycloheximide product, and is ISO-approved.
By utilising a less toxic alternative to cycloheximide, Modified Butzler (ISO) Selective Supplement provides a safer means of suppressing overgrowth by saprophytic fungi and yeasts in Columbia Blood Agar cultures, thus achieving a rating one hazard class lower than the traditional formulation.
In addition to amphotericin B, Modified Butzler (ISO) Selective Supplement includes three other antibiotic agents: cefoperazone, colistin and rifampicin.
Cefoperazone inhibits enterobacteriaceae but not enterococci, while colistin is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms and inhibits the growth of organisms such as Pseudomonas species.
Rifampicin is also active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Modified Butzler (ISO) Selective Supplement is one of a range of cycloheximide-free media developed by Oxoid to give customers the widest possible choice of traditional formulations and less toxic alternatives.
Both cycloheximide and cycloheximide-free products are available from the company's extensive product range.
