Hyclone products complete liquid bioprocess chain

A Perbio Science product story
Edited by the Laboratorytalk editorial team May 17, 2006

New single-use bioreactor and a pressure discharge system are launched to the European biotechnology market on the HyClone - Perbio Science stand at Achema 2006

Visitors to the stand will see the two new products in operation as part of a dynamic working demonstration of a complete process chain, complemented by HyClone's Mixtainer and Smartainer BioProcess Container (BPC) systems.

The HyClone single-use bioreactor (Sub) has been co-developed by HyClone and Baxter Biosciences.

It is intended as a retrofit product to replace the stainless steel bioreactor vessel in existing bioreactor systems, delivering the advantages of single-use bioprocessing.

Instead of having to buy a complete new bioreactor system, users can obtain the same functionality from the HyClone Sub on a single-use basis in which all the contact parts are discarded after use.

The key elements of the design are based on a polyethylene impeller with a bearing/seal assembly linking it to an external drive unit.

At Achema, liquid will be dispensed into the Sub to adjust the pH of the process liquids in the bioreactor using HyClone's new pressure discharge system (PDS).

This is designed to eliminate the adverse peristaltic pulsing effects which can be caused in such applications by use of conventional pumps.

The PDS utilises compressed air to move the liquid steadily into the Sub, achieving a very steady, pulse-free flow.

Mixtainer, HyClone's integrated single-use sterile system for mixing and maintaining homogenous aqueous solutions, will also be utilised in this demonstration.

This completely closed system makes use of magnetic mixing technology to eliminate wastage of 'dead' liquid volumes, so that mixing continues until the last drop of liquid has been dispensed.

Completing the process chain will be the latest generation of HyClone's Smartainer system which provides stainless steel containers to hold and transport sterile liquids.

At Achema, Smartainer will be used for media connections out of the Sub.

Representatives from HyClone will be in attendance on the stand to tell visitors about the company's Labtainer BioProcess container systems for small volume liquid handling applications, in addition to its well-respected range of ready-prepared process liquids.

This includes media such as Tryptone soya broth, several new chemically-defined media and buffer solutions for downstream processing.
