Determining hexane-extractable material
New performance-based method applicable to aqueous matrices that require the use of n-hexane as the extraction solvent and gravimetry as the determinative technique
A new method summary by 3M has been released by Presearch, entitled 'Method 1664 - N-Hexane Extractable Materials (HEM) and Silica Gel Treated N-Hexane Extractable Material (SGT-HEM) by Extraction and Gravimetry (Oil and Grease and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons)' This is a performance-based method applicable to aqueous matrices that requires the use of n-hexane as the extraction solvent and gravimetry as the determinative technique

This method summarises only the HEM quantification portion of method 1664.
A one litre water sample is passed through the new 3M Empore Oil and Grease Disk and eluted with n-hexane.
The extract is dried with sodium sulphate, hexane is evaporated and the residue is weighed and reported as HEM.
