Ultrasonic scanning system gives best resolution for superficial structures in the head and neck, says consultant radiologist

The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital has found the Philips Ultrasound HDI 5000 Sono CT ideal for the specialist examinations carried out on patients coming through the hospital Tim Beale, consultant radiologist, explained: "About 90% of my work involves examinations of the head and neck area

These are mainly superficial structures and the SonoCT feature provides the best resolution for this type of near field work as the grayscale is both less grainy and clearer to a much greater depth." "When a patient presents with a lump in the head or neck area, the aim is to determine the underlying cause - for example, whether it originates in the parotid or an adjacent node supplemented by ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration.

I find the SonoCT is very good for this because the needle can be seen so clearly.".
