Award for protein array product strategy
Frost and Sullivan award recognises leading fully integrated tool solution provider to the emerging protein array market
PerkinElmer Life Sciences has been selected as the winner of Frost and Sullivan's 2002 Market Engineering Award for Product Line Strategy for the execution of its strategy that provides clients a fully integrated tool solution for the emerging protein array market Frost and Sullivan cited PerkinElmer's November 2001 acquisition of Packard BioScience as a catalyst enabling the company to make "a significant push into the protein array space, strategically positioning (its) Hydrogel surface chemistry with a complete assortment of instruments positioned to provide a comprehensive research solution." Frost and Sullivan noted that its prestigious Product Line Strategy Award is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated the most insight into customer needs and product demands

It added that PerkinElmer has optimised its product line by leveraging products with the various price, performance, and feature points required by the market.
PerkinElmer was presented the award on the basis of a number of interviews with suppliers, end-users, and industry experts following the tracking of all end-user requirements and market dynamics within the industry.
Among the additional criteria considered by Frost and Sullivan in presenting this award were: the introduction of new products, strategically positioned to balance the product line; the ability to accommodate different market segments or different markets within an industry by repurposing technology; the enhancement of product offerings through optimization of packaging, service, delivery, financing, and/or other value-added services; and strategic technology or marketing acquisitions or alliances.

Frost and Sullivan noted that PerkinElmer is successfully leveraging the leadership position that Packard BioScience has enjoyed in the total biochip market with respect to spotters and scanners, providing "a strong competitive advantage with established brand equity, which will ultimately serve to overcome barriers to adoption in this market." "The protein array market is newly emerging with participants facing significant challenges from both technical and marketing perspectives," Gay added.
"Coupled with a product line that addresses these technical challenges, PerkinElmer's established sales and marketing infrastructure will translate into gains in a market poised for high double-digit growth." Earlier this year, Frost and Sullivan presented PerkinElmer the 2002 Market Engineering Merger and Acquisition Strategy Award for the acquisition of Packard BioScience.
In presenting the award, Frost and Sullivan recognized the competency with which PerkinElmer Life Sciences discovered and integrated synergies.
In choosing the recipient of the Merger and Acquisition Award, a team of Frost and Sullivan analysts tracked all mergers and acquisitions within the industry.
All participants were compared and evaluated based on a number of criteria including: increased profit margin, market share, production capacity, client base, and improved cost savings from the reorganisation of operations and sales distribution functions before and after the merger/acquisition.
