Multicomponent analyte determination by
GC/MS
A new application note from PerkinElmer outlines the use of quadrupole mass spectrometry to identify and quantify multicomponent analytes at low levels
Instrumentation and methods are described, and results illustrated Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is widely used in environmental analyses because its selectivity enables positive identification without additional sample processing

Along with the ability to make qualitative determinations, GC/MS is an invaluable tool for providing quantitative results.
While mass spectrometry is generally considered less sensitive than certain selective detectors such as the ECD, it is sensitive enough for most applications.
The analysis of multi-component analytes, such as Toxaphene and the Aroclors, to the levels required for environmental analysis, is more of a challenge.
However, recent technological advances in quadrupole mass spectrometry and sample introduction provide the enhanced sensitivity required to identify and quantify multi-component analytes at the low levels required for environmental analyses, as outlined in this application note.
