"The experience gained working in the laboratory focussed attention on the coursework and made it more enjoyable to study," she said.
From the outset, Wanessa proved an exceptional student and was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Best Student Award in her second year.
In her industrial placement, Wanessa worked with the PS Analytical research team, which helped her to develop her analytical skills and offered her experience of research projects.
As part of her final degree programme, she carried out a research project with PS Analytical entitled The development of novel extraction procedures for the speciation of arsenic in soils.
Wanessa is now hoping to complete her education by studying for a PhD.
For the main part of her studies, Wanessa was based in the School of Science at the University of Greenwich at Medway.
Following a ?4 million refit last year, the university is a major centre for teaching and research, with state of the art laboratories and other facilities on its campus at Chatham Maritime.
PS Analytical founder and managing director Peter Stockwell, who is a visiting professor at the University of Plymouth, has long been in favour of the industrial placement programmes.
"No fewer than six of our permanent staff have been recruited via this route," he said.
