RSSL can now identify trace amounts of lupin flour - an allergen feared to be as dangerous as peanuts to those with a lupin allergy - in food products, as well as kiwi fruit and other allergens

Reading Scientific Services (RSSL) will be launching a new test within its allergens portfolio at this year's Food and Drink Expo Allergens are one of this year's hot topics in food now that new labelling legislation has come into force

RSSL can now identify trace amounts of lupin flour in food products.

This allergen is feared to be as dangerous as peanuts to those with a lupin allergy.

Lupin flour is used widely as a wheat flour supplement, and it's believed by many that allergic reactions to it have been under-reported.

Lupin flour isn't on the EU list of 12 allergens that have to be labelled if present in a food, but it is currently the subject of discussions within the European Food Safety Authority.

Kiwi fruit is another potentially serious allergen for which RSSL has also developed a new test.

In addition to providing testing services for these and many other allergens, RSSL also offers advice on how to avoid risk of cross contamination in the production environment, and to help companies validate their HACCP plans.

RSSL staff will also be on hand to discuss other analytical and consumer testing services provided by the organisation.

There'll be examples of RSSL LinTech's new product development work on show, which will allow visitors to sample a low GI biscuit and a tropical fruit-flavoured drink that is a 'good source of fibre'.

Sugar replacement and sugar reduction continue to be big areas of work for RSSL LinTech, and experts will be available to discuss strategies and approaches for sugar reduction in a wide range of food products.
