The competition closes on 1 August 2005 and everyone is invited to enter.
Entries should be in the form of specimens on standard glass microscope slides, mounted with permanent mounting media and coverslipped.
There are three categories of submission: hematoxylin and eosin stains, special stains, and an open stain category.
The company's website gives details of the competition and conditions of entry.
"Whether histology is your profession or just a hobby, we invite you to enter your favourite slide to gain some well deserved attention and possibly win valuable prizes," said Mark Frei, Sigma-Aldrich technical marketing specialist.
Contest winners will be announced at the 31st Annual National Society for Histotechnology Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on 10 September 2005, and microphotographs of the winning entries will be posted on the Sigma-Aldrich website.
