Size really does matter
Six functions in one portable battery-operated UV/Vis/NIR spectrometer may make traditional larhe laboratory-bound instruments redundant
The StellarNet EPP series of miniature fibre optic UV/VIS/NIR spectrometers are about to change the face of spectroscopy as it is known today Large non- portable, expensive, laboratory bound instruments may become redundant as a result of this new state-of-the-art technology

High-res NIR spectrometer
StellarNet has announced several new, low cost, high-resolution near infrared spectrometers that can be used for laboratory or portable applications
This unique range of products have six functions in one instrument.
The EPP spectrometer can function as a spectrometer, spectroradiometer, fluorimeter, colorimeter, it can also perform colour measurements and optical spectrum analysis.
The functions can be interchanged in only a matter of minutes and the performance is outstanding.

Portable colour measurement
Measurement of large or irregularly shaped objects - difficult or even impossible with conventional colour measurement instrumentation - is made easy through use of fibre optics
There is also the added benefit of low cost of ownership and modest base price tag of around ?2500.
These instruments are extremely small (11w x 7h x 16d cm) and portable because they can be battery operated.
So now, instead of collecting samples and bringing them to the laboratory bound instrument, the samples can be measured on the spot by using a variety of immersion probes.
The data can be sent immediately to a PC or laptop PC and then processed by SpectraWiz software into real-time spectra.
This exciting new instrument opens up many possibilities which were previously not possible, such as remote measuring of toxic samples in a fume cupboard or radioactive samples in a glove box.
Or measure the progress of a reaction directly in the vessel in real time.
Special accessories also enable tiny samples of four microlitres to be measured.
This will appeal to scientists working with biological fluids and DNA samples.
The StellarNet EPP series are so versatile because they have a monochromator as a modular unit.
The instrument also uses 'reverse optics', illuminating the sample with polychromatic radiation.
The whole system remains unaffected by ambient lighting, so there is no need for an enclosed sample compartment.
The 2048 element CCD array detector provides real-time spectra with no moving parts.
Standard cells can be inserted into bench-mounted cell holders and, more importantly, immersion probes can be inserted directly into sample vessels.
Stellarnet's ever-growing list of clients applications include the measurement of colour of soil samples, emissions from LED's, emission spectra from plasmas, UV emissions from curing lamps, measuring the transmission of filters, UV reflectance measurements, absorption spectra of alcoholic spirits, plus the printing, paint, textiles and plastics industries where the need to accurately measure colour is paramount.
The list of possible users is almost endless.
