Ultra sensitive protein measurements for Maldi

A Scienion product story
Edited by the Laboratorytalk editorial team Oct 12, 2005

Dispensing system technology is applicable for a variety of instruments and matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation (Maldi) mass spectrometry targets

Maldi target loading procedures using Scienion's Sciflexarrayer piezoelectrically driven dispensing system combine an increase in protein measurement sensitivity with automated target loading.

The technology is applicable for a variety of instruments and Maldi targets.

The method does not require any plastic tips and specific consumables, thereby reducing costs significantly.

Matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation mass spectrometry (Maldi-MS) is a routine method for characterising single proteins or protein mixtures.

Unlike most standard protocols, the Sciflexarrayer protocol allows for an efficient co-crystallisation of matrix and analyte as well as an efficient analyte concentration on the target.

Typically a tenfold increase in measuring protein digests can be achieved using the Sciflexarrayer Maldi target loading procedure.

The non-contact character of the technology allows for walk away spotting operation and a contamination-free operating procedure.

Due to the small drop size, highly concentrated protein spots on the target of choice can be generated.

In addition to protein spotting, Maldi matrices can also be deposited without contact and in various concentrations onto Maldi targets.

The technology allows the loading of both Maldi matrices such as cinnamic acid derivatives and proteins onto a variety of Maldi targets.

Scienion is a Berlin-based life science company offering complete systems in the field of parallel bioanalytics.

Customers include pharma and biotech companies as well as academic research institutions.

Founded in December 2000 as a spin-off of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, the company was originally focused on biochip platform technologies.

With the successful launch of the Sciflexarrayer dispensing system in 2003, the company's focus has switched to hardware.

The Sciflexarrayer allows the aspiration of ultra low level liquid volumes from different reservoirs and contact-free micro drop delivery in the picolitre range onto a variety of carriers.
