Quick tests for Euromarker
The introduction of a European Community-wide mineral oils marking system has resulted in the demand for low cost equipment that allows a quick test for determining Euromarker in marked oils
For many years, colorimetry specialist Tintometer has supplied the UK market with low cost test kits for detecting quinizarin in marked oils that are based on its established Lovibond Comparator system In response to demand, Tintometer has now introduced a similar range of visual test equipment for Euromarker (BASF Solvent Yellow 124), for use either by customs and excise officials to check on fraudulent use of rebated oils or by oil processors to check marker dosage

Tintometer has launched two sector guides, available free of charge, for colour measurement in edible and industrial oils and petroleum oils waxes and petrochemicals
Tintometer's equipment employs a test method where the Euromarker present in the oil is extracted into dilute hydrochloric acid solution and the intensity of the colour produced is proportional to the quantity of Euromarker present in the sample.
Using a standard Lovibond comparator, the sample is compared with a series of Lovibond colour glass standards housed in a test disc, which are precalibrated to give direct readings of Euromarker.
Three Lovibond test discs are now available for Euromarker: a roadside test that is calibrated to determine the percentage of marked oil in unmarked oil over the range 0-10% and two warehouse tests for kerosene or clean diesel that determine the % of recommended Euromarker dosage (6mg Solvent Yellow 124 in one litre of oil) present in the marked oil.
