Development sees Thermo's X series II ICP-MS quadrupole system and New Wave Research's UP193 solid-state laser ablation system coming together in quadrupole ICP-MS geochemistry applications

Building on their long-standing partnership, Thermo Electron and New Wave Research, a manufacturer of laser-based systems and modules, have announced a new instrument integration to address the needs of the geochemistry community Popularity of the ICP-MS technique is growing as a routine technique for geochemistry applications due to its high sensitivity and low backgrounds

Addressing these needs, specially organised collaboration days were held at Thermo's Winsford factory where the UP193 had been installed to develop and demonstrate key geochemistry applications to geologists.

One specific geochemistry application of the new ICP-MS integration is the analysis of Pb/U ratios in zircons.

This coupling facilitates accurate assessments of concordance in zircon populations with highly variable age characteristics.

This unparalleled combination of the UP193 with the X series II provides the most rapid, flexible and cost effective analytical solution for zircon analyses in the field of geochemical research.

The X series II ICP-MS presents enhanced benefits across the whole range of common ICP-MS applications.

The ease of use and the practical design of this instrument means that laboratories can achieve their analytical objectives faster, with greater confidence and less hands-on time from the operator.

Furthermore, the X series II instrument is configured with the new Xs interface for LA-ICP-MS applications to facilitate analyses with high sensitivity and high matrix tolerance capabilities.

With factories in California and Montana, New Wave Research manufactures Nd:YAG lasers and laser ablation systems, continuously developing every facet of commercial laser ablation units from the fundamental laser design through to implementation in a purpose-built beam delivery system with concurrent software development.

New Wave Research is currently global leader in the laser ablation market, with over 80% market share.

The UP193 solid state laser ablation system is a brand new purpose-built package producing 193nm wavelength output with power densities at the sample comparable to Excimer type lasers, and far in excess of any other solid state systems operating at this wavelength.

New Wave offers world-wide support by laser technicians and LA-ICP-MS specialists.
